How to deal with a cranky toddler |
01/ We tell you three ways
Parents, if you thought that diaper-changing and midnight wailing of your little one was the most challenging part parenthood, brace yourself for the tormenting years of toddlerhood. From screaming on the top of their lungs to throwing whatever they may get their hands on, toddlers aren’t exactly known for their calm demeanour.
02/ How to deal with cranky little ones
As they reach toddlerhood, kids are continuously learning to express themselves in a better manner. As a result, even the happiest child you know may become really crabby and throw a huge tantrum, once in a blue moon. From teething pain, exhaustion to bouts of cold and cough, there is a lot which can put a damper on your little one’s mood.
This is why we present you three simple ways to handle a cranky toddler. Thank us later.
03/ Be patient
For toddlers, the world around them is constantly changing, becoming more fascinating and confusing at the same time. The more they see, the more they want to touch, experience and communicate. When a situation is more complicated than the scope of their vocabulary and understanding, they get frustrated. At this point, it is important to be calm, instead of scolding them or punishing them.
Listen to what they have to say and wait for them to stop crying. Instead of getting irritated, try and present them with solutions.
04/ Use distraction
When your little one demands another bar of chocolate and is ready to throw a fuss, take advantage of the fact that their attention span is very less. Distract them with something entirely else like their favourite toy or switch on their beloved cartoon. Our advice? To avoid public breakdowns, we suggest always carrying one of your little one’s favourite toy or a delicious snack in your bag.
05/ Hug it out
Hungry? No. Cold? No. Tired? No. There will be days when no matter what you do, your kid’s ear-deafening cries do not seem to stop. In those times, instead of getting worked up yourself, take a deep breathe and hug your little one. If your kiddo does not want to hug you, still be around where he/she can see you. Your presence means that they are being heard and not ignored. It can go a long way in calming them down.
06/ The bottom line
Remember that when tiny humans get overwhelmed with big emotions, it is your job as a parent to not lose your calm. Do not take their tantrums personally and help them detangle their feelings and talk through it.
