What is Grits and its health benefits

Grits can be described as a wet meal made out of boiled cornmeal and is generally served with plentiful amounts of butter. The word ‘grits’ comes from the Old English word ‘grytt’ meaning “coarse meal”. They are made from dried, ground corn (Maize) cooked in various liquids like water, milk, or broth, until the mix reaches a thick, creamy, porridge-like consistency. Grits originated in the Southern United States and are now popular nationwide. They are often paired with flavorful ingredients, such as butter, sugar, syrups, cheeses, and meats, shrimp, and catfish. Grits can be both sweet and savory, the latter one being more common. They are similar to other thick maize based porridges from around the world. However, Grits should not be confused with boiled ground corn, mush, or polenta as they have different ingredients and preparation. There are many varieties if grits available including Stone-Ground, Hominy, Quick and Regular, and Instant. Here is a look at some health benefits of Grits.

01/ Rich in antioxidants

Grits contain many powerful antioxidants like lutein, caffeic acid, zeaxanthin, etc. which gives many health benefits. They protect the cells against free radical damage. When the free radicals interact with the cells, they cause damage and result in heart disease and certain cancers.

02/ May protect against eye disorders

Grits contain antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin which are good for eye health. Both these antioxidants are found inside the retina. High intake of lutein and zeaxanthin lowers the risk of cataract and age related macular degeneration. The might also protect the eye against damage by harmful blue light.

03/ Gluten free

Grits are naturally gluten free. People with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity experience side effects, such as bloating, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, and fatigue when they consume non-gluten free items. Grits are a suitable carb alternative for people who have to avoid this family of proteins.

04/ Helps combat anemia

A common cause of anemia is iron deficiency. Without iron, the body cannot make enough hemoglobin. Grits help protect against iron-deficiency anemia. They are a great source of plant-based iron, with one cup (257 grams) providing around 8% of iron.

05/ May help in diabetes treatment

Pure and high-quality grits have a lower glycemic response compared to milled rice. This could be related to a better dietary fiber composition of corn grits. Thus, grits may be more beneficial for those with diabetes.
