7 myths about British royal family that are untrue

7 myths about British royal family that are untrue

When it comes to the British royal family, not only are they surrounded by factual allegations and assertions, but are also encircled with false facts and rumours, that eventually become questionable truths people start to believe. While some are wittily humorous, others are just plain and simply unbelievable. Myths ranging from the Queen’s ridiculous drinking habits to Prince Charles’ eating habits, have not only been proven as absurd speculations but these have fooled many in the long run. That being said.

Here are 7 myths about the British royal family that are absolute lies:

01/ Queen Elizabeth I was a man in disguise of a woman

Besides being known for her long reign and the defeat of the Spanish Armada, Queen Elizabeth I is also known as the “Virgin Queen”, who was assumed to be a male imposter. While the rumour has travelled through centuries, it is not a claim that is true. This theory was first introduced in a book called “Famous Imposters” by Bram Stoker, author of the book “Dracula”. According to him, the real Queen Elizabeth had died at an early age due to a plague. However, to avoid the wrath of King Henry VIII, Elizabeth’s caretakers decided to replace her with a similarly aged boy. But before taking the words of the author, it is important to delve deeper into the real truth, which is somehow hidden in the past.

02/ The Mall in London was built as an emergency airstrip for the royal family

Safety and security are surely two important measures taken by the British royal household. But that does not mean every concrete building and establishment was made with a vision to protect the royal family. That being said, one of the most untrue rumours passed about the royals in England are that The Mall in London was built as an emergency airstrip for the royal family to vacate the premises in times of grave urgency.

03/ Prince Charles will never become the King

Already in his 70’s, it sure seems impossible for Prince Charles to reign over the throne of England. However, the fact that some people claim that due to his old age, the Queen may skip him in the line of succession and name Prince William and Kate Middleton the next king and queen, is absolutely false. Until and unless he steps back from his royal duties and relinquishes his royal powers and privileges, he is very much in the line of succession.

04/ The flying of the Union Flag indicates that the Queen is homehe flying of the Union Flag indicates that the Queen is home

One false belief that is still very existent in today’s time is that the flying Union Flag is an indication to Queen’s presence in the Palace. But the fact of the matter is that it is not the Union Flag, but the Royal Standard that symbolizes that the Queen of England is home.

05/ The Queen of England drinks four glasses of alcohol a day

Reportedly, in 2017, the Queen of England’s former private chef, Darren McGrady, mistakenly quoted and said that the Queen drinks four cocktails each day. However, it was later disclosed that he was just listing the number of Queen's favourite drinks.

06/ Prince Charles needs seven hard-boiled eggs for breakfast

In a 2006 published book “On Royalty” by Jeremy Paxman, it was mentioned that Prince Charles has seven boiled eggs prepared for him every morning, but only eats one. However, the royal household chose to clear the air and in 2019, the Prince of Wales opened a FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions) section on his website, where one question asked if the King indeed needs 7 eggs for breakfast? To which the answer stated, “No, he doesn’t and never has done, at breakfast or any other time.”

07/ The Queen has no power

United Kingdom is surely a constitutional monarchy, but that doesn’t mean that the Queen does not hold any powers. Besides having the authority to declare war in times of crisis, the Queen of England still appoints the Prime Minister following a General Election, grants honours and also plays a significant role in legitimizing laws, which mean she provides the "Royal assent".
