The coronavirus pandemic has certainly changed our lives in unprecedented ways. And when we say unprecedented, we are including the fact that most of the young parents have been thrust upon with the responsibility of being a teacher, in addition to a zillion things they need to handle. So, in between non-stop ringing of work calls, household chores that need your immediate attention, it is completely understandable if you have begun to feel stressed with the mere thought of teaching your little one.
01/ How to beat the homeschooling stress during the pandemic
A lot of parents have developed a newfound respect for teachers as a result of homeschooling. Hence, if you are mortified with the idea of homeschooling your child, be rest assured you are not the only one desperately waiting for the pandemic to go away and the schools to reopen.
We are listing down four ways, you can make homeschooling a little less stressful and more enjoyable for you and your children, both. We do not guarantee that you will immediately start loving the idea of being a teacher and parent, all rolled into one, but they can definitely help you let go of the unnecessary stress.
02/ Take it easy and remember you are NOT a teacher
When you are teaching your child, instead of trying to perfectly imitate a teacher, remember that you are not a teaching professional and it is okay if you are making mistakes. You are bound to get frustrated and irritated (sometimes at yourself or your child) and all of these emotions are valid. When you know that you are not supposed to excel at teaching subjects, you have not touched in a decade or so, you will stop beating yourself up.
03/ Don’t compare yourself with other parents
The golden mantra of never comparing yourself with the online world STILL applies! So, if you are chewing your nails at how the ‘perfect parents’, YouTubers and bloggers seem to have it all figured out, we are going to stop you right there. It is understandable to get bummed out when others make teaching little ones to look easy, but you’ve to remember your limitations and strengths. Some parents chose to homeschool out of sheer choice and some are naturally great at it. However, the majority of us are floating in the same boat. We are all learning to be better at something we haven’t done before, so cut yourself some slack!
04/ Chalk out a plan but stay flexible
Remember you don’t have to make a rigid school time-table, but having a routine will help your child continue studying even at home. Make it a point to include lunchtime and break time in their daily routine and try to be flexible with the routine. Again, if your child only wants to read storybooks or play with Legos and puzzles on certain days, let him do that too.
05/ Remember, you are teaching your kids during a crisis
In our increasingly hectic lifestyles, it is easy to forget that there is pandemic going on which has disrupted our normalcy entirely. So, in case you forgot today, you are not teaching your child at home because you like homeschooling, you are doing so because there is a crisis. A parent, a teacher and professional are three different jobs and you cannot excel at all three of them at the same time. It is also okay if your teaching schedule does not go as per plan every day, remember to be flexible.
