We all know that virus and germs are highly contagious. One family member falls sick, and soon the others start showing symptoms. This happens because the sick person starts leaving traces of cold and flu germs that remain on surfaces for days. It is by coming in contact with these contaminated surfaces, the cycle of illness continues until it has gripped everyone in the family.
When someone in your household gets sick, it’s important to keep everyone else under your roof healthy. One of the easiest ways to ensure this is by disinfecting our homes properly. Keep in mind that disinfecting has to be strategic and should focus on items that really matter. We will tell you the right way to disinfect your house after someone in the family has been sick:
01/ Isolate the sick person
The germs spread when the sick person coughs, sneezes or talks. You can also come in contact with the pathogens by touching the surface that has flu viruses on it. To prevent this, it is best to confine the sick person to a separate room. This will reduce the exposure of germ to the rest of the family and you will have to clean less area.
02/ Disinfect commonly touched surfaces
Although disinfecting the surface should be a part of your usual cleaning routine, the process becomes more crucial when someone is sick. Start with commonly touched items in the house like counters, doorknobs, refrigerator handles, remote controls and especially cell phones. It is best to clean the surroundings with disposable paper towels than sponges. By using sponges or towels, the chances of spreading the germs to other places increase.
03/ Bedrooms
When we are sick we spend most of our time resting. Spending time on the bed when suffering from cold or fever can leave germs or bacteria in the fabric. To prevent them from lingering on, it is important to wash the bed linens after using them. If there are any stuffed toys, they should be cleaned as well.
04/ Living room
To prevent contamination in the living room, cover the furniture with a washable sheet. If possible make the person sit on a separate chair. Avoid decorative cushions and clean the tables and remote daily.
05/ Bathrooms
Bathrooms are harbouring grounds for germs and bacteria. They should be cleaned regularly with antibacterial disinfectants. In case you are sharing the bathroom with the sick person, then it is important to clean it regularly. You will be surprised to know that the faucets and doorknobs of the bathroom contract cold and flu viruses whenever someone in the house falls sick. So clean them daily and wipe the sink and the floor properly. Also, do not share the sick person’s hand towel as it can increase the risk of infection.
06/ Kitchen
It is best to not let the sick person cook food for the rest of the family. In this case, handwashing is enough to prevent the virus from spreading. All the frequently touched items like tables, chair backs, refrigerator handle, and drawer should be wiped down with disinfectant wipes and sprays.
07/ Laundry
Clean the sick person's towels, bedding and clothes separately. Put them in the washing machine and clean your hands after that.
