How to control an aggressive pet dog

Your dog might be a really good pet to you, but the same might not be the case with a visitor. Dogs could start growling and barking out of aggression or start jumping in excitement when they see someone new entering the house. This behaviour can scare the person who comes to visit you and so, you must try to train your canine friend to react in the right manner. There are many ways in which you can help your dog behave in front of guests.

01/ Train them to respond to commands like "stay", "down" and "no"

Reinforcing this kind of training will help you take control of your pet. They will start to focus on the commands you give when you have a visitor at home and behave according to what you command.

02/ Keep your furry friend away when a guest arrives

If you know your dog might react inappropriately, always keep them away (maybe in a kennel or its favourite corner in the house) when you have someone coming over so that you can minimize their jumping and poor behaviour. Introducing your pet immediately to the guests is not a good idea as it might be taken by surprise and end up reacting in an unwanted way.

03/ Greet the guests outside the door and then move inside

If your pet dog is very territorial, it might not let you greet the guests with hugs and affection. Your gestures with the guests might instigate the dog's behaviour and it might start to bark. Hence, you can step out of the door for a few minutes, greet the visitors and then enter inside calmly.

04/ Introduce your dog slowly

Dogs get to know new faces by sniffing them, and so, you will have to allow your dog to greet the guests in its own ways. You need to allow your canine buddy to approach and learn about the guest in order to accept the new people. You can even introduce your dog to your guest by guiding their hand to the dog's nose for a formal introduction. But do this only if you are sure that you have been able to tame your pet's aggressiveness appropriately.

05/ Reward your dog's good behaviour

When they finally start to learn how to greet a new person entering the house, you can treat them with a reward each time. This will make them learn faster and act appropriately each time in the hope to get a reward in the future too.
