As the number of coronavirus cases is growing with each passing day across the globe, more and more people are opting for online shopping. It might seem like a much safer option to get everything you require delivered on your doorstep, without stepping out of the house. But looking at the highly contagious nature of the virus, most people have been second-guessing their decision. It is really safe to get the parcel delivered at home? What steps does one needs to take to avoid picking up germs from mail and groceries? Here are the answers to those questions:
The risk of infection
Several studies suggest that the virus can live on different surfaces for multiple days. But their number subsequently decreases on different surfaces. So, even if the person carrying the package was infected there are thin chances that the virus would be left on your package by the time it reaches your doorstep. However, it is always better to take some necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection. Here are 3 things you can do:
01/ Keep the parcel outside for 24 hours
If possible, leave the parcel or the delivery package out for 24 hours. In case the packet contains perishable items, then carefully open the packet outside the door and throw the covering in the dustbin. After this, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and then bring the food products inside the house.
02/ Clean your goods properly
Your work doesn't end after throwing the cover of the goods. You have to clean the goods and products properly after bringing them inside. It is not recommended to use disinfectants, cleaning wipes or soap on fresh produce. Clean your veggies with water. You can add 50ppm chlorine in warm water and dip your vegetables in it for a few minutes. In the case of cloth and other items, it is advisable to wash them properly before using them.
03/ Food container
In the case of food deliveries, remove the outer covering outside the door, wash or sanitise your hands and then bring the parcel inside the house. After this, carefully transfer the food into another container and dispose of the first one. Make sure to clean your hands properly after this.
These are some steps that you can take to keep yourself safe!
