The answer is YES! This debate has gone on for longer than whether pineapple should be allowed on pizza! Many people like their protein shake in water after a workout. But did you know that you can also experiment with protein powder and discover delicious combinations? Here’s why and how you should add your protein powder to tea, milk and coffee!
Pankaj Pandey, a well-known personal fitness instructor says, “Yes we can add protein powder to tea, milk or coffee and it will help in improving our metabolism. We can add protein powder to our favourite beverage but must remember to mix when the beverage is at room temperature.”
Adding protein powder to hot liquids can turn them into undrinkable rubbery blobs as it does not mix well with the liquid and releases gas as it cooks. Do NOT especially perform this experiment in a shaker as it can spew all over the counter and cap can fly off because of the added pressure.
01/ Protein Tea
Adding protein powder to tea combines the many benefits of tea and gives a boost of protein. This one is perfect for a midday caffeine boost and also acts as a great appetite suppressant. You can add your unflavoured protein powder to your favourite flavour of tea to make a delicious beverage. You can opt for any type of milk that you prefer, however, the lower-calorie the better.
02/ Protein Coffee
You can get nearer to completing your daily protein intake by adding protein powder to your cup of joe. Coffee is already revered in the workout scene, energising, gearing up the metabolism and relieving muscle pain. It also helps you focus better on the exercises. Hence, a protein coffee brings together the best of two worlds. In fact, if you want you can make a cold coffee shake by adding some ice.
03/ Protein Milk
Shaking your protein scoop with milk makes more difference than you can imagine. Adding just 200ml of skimmed milk can rev up the protein in your shake by a whopping 7.2 grams. It also has an improved hydration index than water. Apart from giving you a creamy texture and smooth taste, milk also steps up the nutritional value of your shake.
04/ When to drink protein powder with water?
Drinking protein powder with chilled water works best when you have just finished working out. Mr Pandey suggests that at that time the body requires immediate absorption of protein and water is absorbed faster than any other liquid. However, you can drink protein powder in other beverages to complete your daily protein intake.
05/ What to do if you’re craving a hot protein beverage?
Milk Slurry- A great way suggested by Mr Pandey if you want to enjoy a hot cup of protein is to make a slurry!
Make a thick milk slurry by mixing 2 parts of milk and one part of protein powder at the bottom of your cup. Boil tea leaves in water or steep a teabag. Then slowly mix your hot tea water 2 tbsp at a time to the cup. The same process can be followed with coffee and milk. Using a heat-safe cup or glass works best.
You can enjoy your steamy cup of goodness, perfect for lazy rainy afternoons!
