A Little Dose Of WFH Outfit Inspiration

Break out the sourdough starter and slip into that matching sweatsuit, because we've officially entered full-on work-from-home mode for who knows how long. If you're like us here at Refinery29, you're about one or two weeks into the unfamiliar territory of sofa-turned-desk life and slowly getting used to the strange intimacy of virtual invitations into your boss's living room. Without those daily pow-wows by the Bevi seltzer cooler and IRL face time with anyone that isn't a partner or roommate, you're probably asking yourself: why even bother with clothing right now? You might've very well forgotten what business attire even means at this point. But being indefinitely confined does weird things to the brain, and it's important to maintain some semblance of a routine — so yes, you should start by changing out of those pajamas and brushing your teeth before reading on. We'll wait.

While we can't map out how the next few weeks or months will unfold, what we can do is deliver outfit inspiration courtesy of the R29 team with tips for getting dressed when you've got absolutely nowhere to go.

As unnecessary as outfit planning might seem at the moment, it's an opportunity to assert the slightest bit of control during otherwise overwhelmingly uncertain times. Our advice? Take that opportunity, and have a little fun with it too. Embrace bright colors during this temporary period of darkness. Challenge yourself to come up with an ensemble worthy of a feature on the increasingly popular Working From Home Fits Instagram account. We're not saying to change into your best blazer next time there's a Zoom call on your calendar (although we'd like to imagine that's what Diane Keaton, queen of the power suit, would do), but a statement earring or cute headband might be just what you need... especially if you haven't washed your hair in a while (guilty as charged).

So, put down the peanut butter jar(just for a sec!), take a trip over to your closet, and reacquaint yourself with the treasures it holds. But first, check out what us R29ers are wearing to work from home along with a few affordable things to consider if you're in the market. Keep calm and digital window shop on, because this is the best excuse you're gonna get to indulge in some much-needed retail therapy.

What have you been wearing the past few days?
Inside clothes!! Different comfy pants, thin outer layer (sweater or sweatshirt) and fun tee every day. When it's chilly in the mornings, I'll wear a quilted vest too.

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
When I go outside to walk the dog, I'll change my pants into something more athletic and weatherproof. I try not to wear my inside clothes outside.

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?
I've been wearing a soft vest every day — the more pockets, the better. It feels like a hug and keeps me just warm enough, but doesn't restrict my arms at all when I'm working at a computer. Plus, I keep dog treats, ear pods, and my cell phone in the pockets. The key is to pick a vest that's NOT made of nylon or weatherproof material. The swishing sound it makes is far too distracting, and it's impossible to feel indoors-style cozy in an obviously outdoors-only piece. I know inside vests make me look like my grandpa, but in it, I feel like a WFH superhero. The one I love most is a gray quilted one from Gap that I bought over a decade ago, but there are some other great options online as well.

Have you done any online shopping during this period? If so, what did you order?
I told myself that I wouldn't be buying new clothes, but I ran out of my favorite hand moisturizer and accidentally spent $80 on fancy hand creams to reward myself for washing my hands so often. I got a Susanne Kaufman jar and a pump bottle of NUORI hand lotion.

What have you been wearing the past few days?
I mix it up! I make sure I maintain my usual morning routine but these days I'm changing from pajamas to loungewear and sweats instead of my usual workwear. Today was a little different because I had to do a presentation over Zoom but ultimately my WFH "professional" look amounts to my typical neutrals (with a few more wrinkles because I don't want to steam) and no shoes (I put on socks if I get cold). My top is a silk Equipment button-up, my slouchy, high-waisted pants are from Zara.

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
No

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?
I have a fuzzy oversized "jacket" with a pooh bear patch. Stole it from my mom 12 years ago — it's cozy and great for being in my chilly garden level apartment all day (when I'm trying to save on heat!).

Have you done any online shopping during this period? If so, what did you order?
I don't have a closet and have run out of space in my current set up. I finally ordered a set of drawers I've been meaning to buy to fix this problem. I put it off for weeks because I never feel like I have the time it would take to put it together. I now have all the time.

What have you been wearing the past few days?
I am 31 weeks pregnant and plan to keep my Rent the Runway membership so I have been wearing a lot of "fancy" sweatshirts from RTR and one-piece maternity jumpsuits. I also put on a fun headband before every conference call as it makes me feel better about how I look on video haha.

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
I have been trying to work out every morning so I will change into workout clothes for an online Pilates class or prenatal "cardio".

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?
Headbands! They immediately make any outfit (and not washed hair) look more presentable. This Lele Sadoughi one has been my fave (which I got from the Shopbop sale)!

Have you done any online shopping during this period? If so, what did you order?
None yet - I am finding that working from home = a million more calls that take up the whole day! Hopefully next week I can figure out how to squeeze in some multi-tasking shopping time :)

What have you been wearing the past few days?
Similar outfits every day — Comfy bottoms (trying to stay away from sweatpants) and old summer tops with the occasional cardigan or sweater on standby for cooler days. Cozy socks have become my personal faves and a must!

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
Yes! Cooking is an activity (the only activity) that forces me to switch my outfit up. I throw on a large old t-shirt, some short pants to withstand the heat and my wedged clogs. Throw on an apron and I'm ready to go.

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?
Socks and lounging pants! Hands down. There's an overall sense of comfort this combination brings where I'm ready to hunker down and work for the next few hours straight without the daily discomfort of wearing jeans and boots at the workplace every day.

Have you done any online shopping during this period? If so, what did you order?
Yes, I have. I ordered two N-95 respirator masks via Amazon Prime that were way overpriced but super worth it.

What have you been wearing the past few days?
For me it's all about the sweatsuits — a matching set that makes me feel cute but cozy. I have two in rotation right now: a green one from Entireworld, and a slime-colored one from Lou & Grey.

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
Nope!

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?
My Entireworld sweatsuit.

What have you been wearing the past few days?
I have been wearing a lot of loungewear, comfortable wide-leg pants, and sweaters. I want to make sure that the outfits I wear still make me feel active and also comfortable.

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
I have been trying to exercise, thus my outfit goes from loungewear to fitness attire. When I change from the two, I try to make sure my fitness wear makes me feel good and positive. I will put on my cutest sports bra and leggings. These little things make me feel more motivated to get up and move.

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?
Light sweaters and drawstring sweatpants.

Have you done any online shopping during this period?
I have been online shopping for skirts. I am craving spring! I bought an orange skirt from H&M just to remind myself soon it will be warmer and soon I can go back to bars with friends on weekends.

What have you been wearing the past few days?
WFH has been brutal to my overall cuteness, so I decided to try to make every outfit count. I usually try to create ~~vibe~~ around my outfits, something resembling a character in a weirdly average indie movie. I end up wearing the same jeans, my favorite giant oversized grandpa Levi's. I usually pair them with something that's very casual-but-cute-and-sexy-ish, maybe an oversized men's shirt, or a shrunken-fit tee. I try to add in some accessories too so I can be glam and relaxed at the same time.

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
Yes! I try to paint and read at the end of the workday. I don't want to risk my clothes getting dirty, so I change into a painting outfit. This is when I channel Demi Moore in Ghost or Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You.

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?
A pair of oversized jeans. I usually thrift mine because they're almost always available and super cheap.

Have you done any online shopping during this period? If so, what did you order?
I ordered a black corset tank, to be (hopefully) worn with an oversized pair of men's tailored trousers and lots of dangly shiny jewelry!

Been mixing it up. But, my go-to outfit during the quarantine has been my cozy knit pants with sweater to match.

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
My cozy knit set has been perfect to work in, and even better to cuddle up like a burrito and binge watch Netflix series in.

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?
My knit pants from Skims.

Have you done any online shopping during this period? If so, what did you order?

What have you been wearing the past few days?
Mainly yoga pants or comfortable lounge pants, a soft tie-dye sweatshirt, and Ugg slippers. No makeup and my hair is usually pulled back with a headband.

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
My outfits are versatile so I can avoid changing throughout the day and having to do more laundry than necessary. Most outfits are presentable but comfortable for WFH, a light workout, lounging, and more.

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?
Yoga pants! They are so comfortable and also look cute with everything.

What have you been wearing the past few days?
T-shirts and jeans. I wore sweatpants the first day but it made me too tired so I've been making myself put jeans on (but not necessarily a bra lol).

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
Yes! I've been doing at-home workouts so I change into leggings and a sports bra for that.

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?
I've worn American Eagle mom jeans every day (I have three pairs and they are the best jeans) and various t-shirts. The t-shirt I'm wearing today is from Etsy, it's the softest shirt I've ever owned.

Have you done any online shopping during this period? If so, what did you order?
I keep putting together carts on Everlane and American Eagle and then deleting them because I feel like I shouldn't buy clothes that I can't wear outside.

What have you been wearing the past few days?
I love being comfy, so I’ve been wearing a pair of sweatpants every single day. Usually, I’ll wear a t-shirt or tank with another layer, like a sweater or sweatshirt, in case I get warm throughout the day.

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
If I want to do a quick at-home workout I’ll put on a pair of leggings and a sports bra, but if I just want to do some jumping jacks and move around I won’t change.

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?

Probably the long cardigan I’m wearing in the photo! It’s not too heavy so I don’t get that warm wearing it, and it also makes me feel more like an actual person than if I was wearing an entire sweat outfit.

Have you done any online shopping during this period? If so, what did you order?
I’ve done a ton of online shopping, I hate to admit. I purchased a new comforter and rug from T.J. Maxx for my bedroom, some self-tanner on Amazon (I’ve never self-tanned before so I’m trying it out now) and some jeans and a bag from Asos.

What have you been wearing the past few days?
Like George Costanza, I happen to dress based on mood, but the past few days I've been dressing based on the mood I'd like to be in. So I'm wearing comfortable clothes that are uplifting like today's daisy-patterned Ganni maxi dress. When I got it in the mail I thought it looked a little bit like one of my Bubby's house dresses and almost returned it, but now it's perfect for working from home.

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
Nope, I am too busy with work. Once I'm dressed, I'm dressed.

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?
I've worn something different every single day to help keep up a feeling of normalcy and positivity.

What have you been wearing the past few days?
Getting dressed up and feeling good about what I wear is a form of self-care for me and is helping me stick to a normal routine. I'm wearing outfits that I would wear in the office, but also prioritizing comfort. Bold tops, jeans or comfy bottoms, and always cool earrings to bring some fun to my video calls.

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
I'm changing my outfit every time I go outside to sweats or workout gear. This is because I'm going for a walk around my neighborhood and I want to be comfortable, but also because I am throwing those clothes in the laundry right away to protect myself from germs. I have read mixed information about how long the virus can stay on clothes and I would rather be safe than sorry.

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?

Free People carries so many fun, yet comfortable pants. I have a few pairs that have been my go-to.

What have you been wearing the past few days?
I've mostly been wearing leggings, very oversized sweatshirts à la Hailey Bieber, and an old college shirt I got when visiting my brother at Boston University ages ago (I like the memory associated with it). But today, I went full-on Zsa Zsa Gabor with a glamorous, floor-length robe by Deeba London. Do I normally wear luxury silk loungewear to hang around the house? Absolutely not. But I got this special little number for my mini-moon which I will no longer be going on, so I thought to myself... WHY NOT?

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
Yes! I am an avid runner, and now more than ever this has been a great way to clear my head, enjoy some fresh air, and get in some exercise without getting too close to others. I like Lululemon's Fast and Free leggings which essentially feel like you've got nothing on at all. I also like that mine are a vibrant shade of red because they add a bit of fun to the monotony of my current schedule.

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?

An oversized Champion sweatshirt I stole from my dad (or was it my brother?) long before places like Shopbop and Bergdorf Goodman started selling them!

Have you done any online shopping during this period? If so, what did you order?
I'm using the extra time at home to act upon one or two of the small interior design ideas I've had in mind for months. Right now, I'm focusing on cool ways to organize and display all my books, starting with a tree bookshelf. And depending on how this one looks in the space, I might just order a second one!

What have you been wearing the past few days?
I started out just wearing my pajamas mostly because I have a lot of laundry that I needed to do but I'm trying to mix it up now since I'm feeling a bit...stale (lol). Recently I've been doing my makeup and putting on things that make me look presentable but also comfy! For tops, I've been wearing a lot of sweaters paired with minimal jewelry to brighten things up. My bottoms range from comfy jeans to sweatpants since they're not as important at the moment.

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
I wouldn't say I have anything during work hours that requires me to change my outfit but I have been working out a lot more (in an effort to keep my circulation flowing) so I change into athletic wear for that!

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?
Something like a loose mock neck sweater because it makes me feel like I still look presentable and stylish but I can also stay comfortable during the day. If it's warmer, I'll wear just a plain t-shirt.

Have you done any online shopping during this period? If so, what did you order?
Yes! I don't normally wear a ton of jewelry but since my face is being accentuated these days I recently purchased a few necklaces and earrings from Etsy.

What have you been wearing the past few days?
I have been wearing the same pajama pants, t-shirt, and over-sized sweatshirt for three days. I put on tights for a brief period yesterday to go to the store but I changed back into my PJs immediately when I got home. I have yet to put on a bra. I think this is going to have to change next week.

Do you do have any at-home activities that require a change of outfit, and if so, what do you change into?
Next week, I am going to try to do some yoga videos at home, and for that, I will change into gym shorts and a sports bra.

What clothing item do you rely on the most when working from home and why?
I stole my boyfriend's Nike sweatshirt years ago and now I wear it every day I'm home. It's basically my robe. I like to wear it while I work because it's warm and comfy, and since it's too big, it's not constricting.

Have you done any online shopping during this period? If so, what did you order?
No. I had a new year's resolution not to online shop for clothes anymore because nothing ever fits right and I'm so lazy about returning items. I hope I don't break that resolution now out of boredom!
