Never say this to a breastfeeding mother

Breastfeeding mother

Becoming a mom changes everything. Apart from taking care of your newborn, there are so many other things a new mother has to deal with - like some unwarranted advice and queries from people around her.
We all know that everyone learns from their personal experiences. And there is no one rule that fits all, especially when it comes to parenting. So, next time before making a comment or asking a question about breastfeeding, remember this.

Do you think the baby gets enough to eat?

Breastfeeding moms are working on instincts and barely get enough sleep. Probably they do not have the exact clue about when their baby is full. But you need to relax as she is learning. The baby obviously cannot tell that he is full, but the mother knows the clues and her instincts are enough to tell when her baby is hungry or full. And even if she doesn’t, you are not helping by asking the question.

Breastfeeding destroyed my boobs

A woman has to deal with a lot during her pregnancy and even after delivery. It is always a good idea to keep your harsh comments related to breastfeeding to yourself. Also, it’s the pregnancy that leads to sagging boobs and not breastfeeding, as per the study by Aesthetic Surgery Journal.

I did not breastfeed my kids and they are doing fine

That’s great. But if a mother wants to breastfeed her baby, it has literally no co-relation with you and your baby. It’s all about personal choices.

Isn’t your child a little grown up to be breastfed?

And isn’t that none of your business? Every baby is different and so are their needs. Some people are not comfortable with extending breastfeeding, but that doesn’t mean it’s not right. In fact, the American Academy of Paediatrics recommends breastfeeding the baby for one year and continue as long as the mother and the baby wish. It is not about how long your mother, sister or best friend did it or wants you to do it.

Feeding on demand will spoil your baby

Infants are very demanding and can be manipulative. You cannot spoil such a small baby. Some new-borns feed as often as 1.5 hours and some go about 3 hours. It’s normal to feed a new-born 8 – 12 times in a day.
